Chester A. Arthur

It was an assassin's bullet that suddenly transformed Arthur from vice president to president in 1881. When his train stopped in Bloomington on Aug. 2, 1883, he was obviously whistle stopping for election. His train was elaborately decorated and the Bloomington Telephone reported that about 1,000 turned up at the station to hear him speak.
