| Carnegie Foundation scholar Anne Colby will address a Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 12–13, workshop at IU Kokomo, introducing faculty and staff from all eight IU campuses to the objectives of the American Democracy Project (ADP), sponsored by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).
IU Kokomo is one of 144 U.S. university campuses involved in the project, which is aimed at helping undergraduates’ become better citizens by fostering the understanding of and commitment to meaningful civic involvement. ADP seeks to integrate academic and student life programs so students will be encouraged to see the connections between what they study and what they do as members of their communities such as voting, social advocacy, local volunteerism and “other civic activities necessary for the vitality of a democracy,” said Stuart Green, vice chancellor for academic affairs.
Colby is the lead author of the core text framing the goals to which the ADP subscribes, Educating Citizens: Preparing America’s Undergraduates for Lives of Moral and Civic Responsibility (Jossey-Bass, 2003).
Other workshop speakers will be:
Charles Nelms: IU vice president for student development
and diversity
Alfred Guillaume: IU South Bend vice chancellor for
academic affairs
John Hayek: Project manager for the National Survey
of Student Engagement
George Mahaffey: AASCU vice president for academic
leadership and change
Eric Hellstern: director of education sales for the
New York Times
The New York Times and the AASCU are joint sponsors of the American Democracy Project.
Running from 3–6:45 p.m., the opening portion of the workshop will introduce ADP and look at examples of campus civic engagement, drawn from Educating Citizens. Dinner will follow.
Reconvening at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 13, participants will brainstorm on using ADP resources and the findings of the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) for ADP-related campus activities. Developed by the IU Center for Post-Secondary Research and Planning, the NSSE has been used by more than 725 colleges and universities to evaluate undergraduate learning and set benchmarks of effective educational practice. The workshop will conclude at 11:55 a.m.
