Stocum to present ‘Legacy of Frankenstein’
By Diane Brown

Volcanic rocks in a national park in California, lava fields in Iceland, and sculptures based on the experiences of women are among the topics of research projects that will be discussed Friday, Nov. 7, at the ninth annual IU Undergraduate Research Conference (IUURC) on the IUPUI campus.

Almost 80 undergraduate student researchers from the eight IU campuses across Indiana will present oral papers, posters and performances on their research projects during the conference, which takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Business/SPEA Building, 801 W. Michigan St., Indianapolis.

David Stocum, dean of the Purdue School of Science at IUPUI, will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Stocum will present "The Legacy of Frankenstein: Regenerative Biology and Medicine." The lecture will discuss the medical legacy of Frankenstein from the 19th century to today.

Sponsored by the University Graduate School, IUURC is dedicated to the promotion of undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity performed in partnership with faculty or other mentors as a vital component of undergraduate education at IU campuses. Conference participation is open to students in all disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, business and art as well as science, engineering, and nursing.

"The conference celebrates and promotes undergraduate students’ achievements," said Kathryn Wilson, associate dean for research and graduate Ssudies and director of the IUPUI Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programs
