Ships passing in the night
A ship that conducts a voyage of scientific
discovery is never merely a vehicle, any more than a telescope is
merely a vehicle that transports images of heavenly new worlds to
an observer. IU Home Pages takes you today on a voyage of discovery,
featuring IU researchers involved in the diverse fields of archaeology,
geography, geology, underwater studies, and the history and philosophy
of science.

International Education Week Nov.
13-17
Immigrant populations in the state of Indiana
have increased 10 percent in the past decade, with a concurrent
70 percent increase in the number of language minority K-12 students.
Through IU’s International Studies for Indiana Schools project,
schoolchildren will have the opportunity to learn more about other
countries and cultures through a series of interactive videos to
be broadcast next week from the School of Education in Bloomington.
ISIS was developed in conjunction with IU’s Office of International
Programs world area centers, the Center for Research on Learning
and Technology, and Vision Athena network, a project of Indiana's
Corporation for Educational Communications. And read, too, about
other events planned on IU's campuses to commemorate International
Education Week.

White River green space transported ‘back to
the future’
A team of IUPUI environmental scientists are transforming an urban
riverbank near downtown Indianapolis into the green space it was in the
19th century. Through an initiative of the Center for Earth and
Environmental Science, a strip of the eastern bank of the White River
soon will be alive with the canopies of cottonwoods, sycamores and green
ash, above a field of wildflowers and other native flowering plants. The
ribbon of riverbank flood plain also will yield new scientific data that
will guide the way riverbanks are restored to a natural state throughout
the Mississippi River Valley and across the United States.

groundskeeper Donald Birch took on the task of clearing fallen leaves
from the oak trees behind Greenlawn Hall earlier this semester.
Groundskeepers on all IU campuses have enjoyed unseasonably warm weather
as they’ve performed their tasks. Will snow blower replace rakes in the
not-too-distant future? A Hoosier rule of thumb: if it’s basketball
season, the flakes can begin flying at any moment. The Hoosiers play
Pepperdine Thursday (Nov. 14) in the pre-season National Invitational
Tournament (NIT).
