Performing arts medicine seminar at IPFW Nov. 14

By Susan Domer
The IPFW Department of Music will present a free seminar focusing on the physical problems performers experience in music, dance and theater at 7 p.m. ,Tuesday (Nov. 14) in Neff Recital Hall on the Fort Wayne campus. < p> The seminar will be conducted by Dr. Kenneth Brandt, director of the Performing Arts Medicine Program and director of the Multipurpose Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Center at the IU School of Medicine.

Accompanying Brandt will be a panel of medical experts.

Performance requires rigorous training, which places physical and mental demands on the human body. At times, the body does not respond. While young performers are frequently unaware of potential problems, practice can take its toll. Fingers may become nu mb, muscles may cramp and the throat might burn, along with a myriad of other problems. These impairments can become serious and can ultimately affect a performer’s career.
