| Charlie Nelms, IU vice president for student development and diversity, has been elected to a one-year term as chairman of the board of trustees of the Commission on Inst
itutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). His term began Sept. 1.
The association, founded in 1895, is a not-for profit voluntary organization made up of elementary, secondary and higher education institutions within its region. The commission Nelms heads is headquartered in Chicago and identifies its mission as serving
the common good by assuring and advancing the quality of higher learning. The board of trustees oversees accreditation requirements and processes for institutions of higher learning, and develops policies to foster a culture of assessment and accountabil
ity.
Nelms said that NCA is in a transformation phase and that the way institutional accreditation is performed is changing.
“As chair of the board of directors, I am committed to following through on the myriad of initiatives the commission currently has underway. The ideas that have emerged from NCA’s mission project and from AQIP (Academic Quality Improvement Project) will e
nable the commission to respond more effectively to its members and its many stakeholders.”
Nelms has participated in the accreditation processes of the commission since 1988, serving on 12 evaluation teams and chairing three team visits. He was appointed to the board in 1995 and was elected vice chair of the board in 1998.
