Indiana ranks 24th for arts-related businesses

The Indiana Arts Commission recently received findings of a national study of America’s “creative industries,” revealing the geographic distribution of arts and cultural businesses and organizations.

According to the study, Indiana ranked 24th among the 50 states and District of Columbia in total number of arts-related businesses. The study identified 7,443 “arts-centric” businesses in Indiana, which together employ an estimated 49,035 Hoosiers.

Nationwide, there are an estimated 548,000 arts-related businesses employing nearly three million Americans (2.2 percent of the U.S. workforce).

The study was commissioned by Americans for the Arts, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to representing and serving local communities and creating opportunities for Americans to participate in and appreciate all forms of the arts.

The study combined Dun & Bradstreet (now called D&B) data and geo-economic analysis to map the locations of arts-related entities in six creative industries. Those industries were: performing arts; museum/collections; visual/photography arts; film, radio, TV; design/publishing; and art schools/ services.
