Eight hundred miles from the nearest ocean, IU Bloomington hosted the first National Whale Symposium in November 1975. A 5,000-pound concrete replica of a beached California gray whale delighted young mammals who came to play upon it in Dunn Meadow while their older counterparts took part in events that combined music, art and science. Events included the premiere of Elegy for a Whale by the New York Camerata.
