‘Blood sport’ a good arena for healthy competition

Dexter-Brown

The eighth annual IU vs. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge is underway, and donating blood at any of the Indiana Blood Centers or American Red Cross Blood Center locations will help your favorite Hoosier Big Ten school win. (At press time, Purdue was mopping up the floor with IU’s contributions.)

Still, some IU campuses are holding on as fiercely as the Boston Red Sox. At IU Northwest, for example, the Student Nurses Association will be helping out Tuesday, Nov. 16, at the Savannah Center gymnasium, in conjunction with the campus health fair, to collect 80 units of blood.

"Purdue University Calumet recently had a blood drive for two days and averaged 79 units each day," said Glenda Dexter-Brown, clinical coordinator and lecturer in the School of Nursing and Health Professions. "Our goal is to beat Purdue Calumet."

The school with the most blood donations university-wide will be honored at the Old Oaken Bucket football game at Purdue’s West Lafayette campus on Saturday, Nov. 20. Last year, Purdue won the contest, and a record number of 5,021 units of blood were donated. Purdue leads the series 5-2. To find a donation site nearby:
