Discover IPFW
By Michael Wartell, chancellor of IPFW

Wartell

2003 has been a year of discovery at IPFW, and during the coming years, exciting discoveries are going to continue.

The calendar year began on a positive note. As administrations at all state institutions of higher education in Indiana did, we held our collective breath last winter as the General Assembly worked on a two-year spending plan for the state. When it was all over, IPFW received $33 million in bonding authority for new buildings, a share of a $10-million investment in a fiber optic system to link the major college campuses across the state and $6.5 million for the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center, of which $1.5 is for operating expenses.

For many years, there’s been a familiar refrain here on the IPFW campus: we need more room! And that is especially true when it comes to our music programs. Part of that $33 million will be used to build a new music building. We hope to be holding classes in the new structure within three years.

At IPFW, we are fortunate to house the Fort Wayne campus of the IU School of Medicine, which is located on the third floor of the Classroom-Medical Building. Fourteen million dollars of the General Assembly’s allotment will be used for a new medical education building. When that project is completed, the area now being used by the medical school will be available to other departments, further easing the “classroom crunch.”

There are so many things to anticipate on our campus in the next few years, things that I hope you will take the time to discover yourself. In the meantim, I invite you to “Discover IPFW.”
