IU administrators prepare for possible budget cuts
University administrators
have prepared a number of contingencies for budget reduction based
on proposals announced by Gov. Frank O'Bannon last month. IU President
Myles Brand stressed that preserving academic mission and excellence
will remain at the forefront of any strategy that may be implemented.

Another September
On Sept. 1, 1939, Nazi troops
invaded Poland--the spark that would ignite a second World War,
but on the IU Bloomington campus, tranquility reigned. Frank Banta
and Henry Remak, emeriti professors of Germanic studies at IU, were
graduate students at the time. Remak, a German Jew studying in the
U.S., would be officially labeled an "enemy alien" and worry about
the future of his teaching position at IUPUI's forerunner, the Indianapolis
Extension Center.
