| An old Chinese proverb says: “Give someone a fish and you feed that person for a day. Teach someone to fish and you feed that person for a lifetime.”
The IU Southeast faculty members featured in today’s center section of IU Home Pages educate students by more than merely feeding them facts through lectures. They epitomize the essence of our campus’ academic environment through their enterprising teaching methods, nationally and internationally renowned research, and community outreach. In addition, staff members like June Huggins, coordinator of the IU Southeast Center for Mentoring and Student Outreach, continually challenge themselves with their mission of serving not only students but other members of the community.
We experienced another record enrollment this fall with more than 6,400 students, which is a 5.1 percent increase over enrollment for fall 1999. This was our third consecutive year of attaining a 5 percent enrollment increase.
To achieve higher standards of learning to meet the needs of our growing campus population, IU Southeast is embarking upon several endeavors.
Early next year, we will request $20.4 million from the Indiana General Assembly to build a new Library Building and renovate the existing Library Building. This project will prepare us for technological advancements and allow us to expand student services and student activities.
This month, faculty and staff will move into the new addition to the Life Sciences Building. Renovation will then commence on the existing building with a fall 2001 completion date.
With more than $8.5 million raised in less than 18 months, we are close to achieving our $10 million capital campaign goal. Through the campaign, called “Investing in Our Communities Through Academic Excellence,” we plan to raise $6 million for scholarships and endowments, $2 million for faculty and staff development, and $2 million for technology improvements.
With these endeavors, IU Southeast will continue to develop the most important asset to our communities—productive, intelligent and skilled citizens. Without the necessary ingredients of teaching and learning, this would not be possible.
