• IU Bloomington conducted a midwinter commencement
ceremony in 1997 for the first time since Dec. 17, 1944. This year,
the ceremony is scheduled at 10 a.m. in Assembly Hall on Saturday,
Dec. 18.

• Thirty U.S. campuses— primarily large research institutions—awarded academic
credit for study abroad last year to more than 1,000 of
their students, according to a recent report from the Institute
of International Education; IU Bloomington ranked ninth in number
of students awarded credit. New York University sent the most
students abroad (2,061), followed by the University of California-Los
Angeles (1,917), Michigan State University (1,864), University
of Texas at Austin (1,654), University of Arizona (1,466), University
of Wisconsin-Madison (1,441), University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill (1,426), University of Georgia (1,401), IUB (1,379)
and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1,377).

• IU East offers an Alternative Routes to Certification
program for those who have one bachelor’s degree or advanced degrees
but would like to change professions and become an Indiana certified
teacher. Deadline for enrollment is Feb.1.

• IU South Bend hosted a national conference organized
by the Institute for Applied Community Research at the IU School
of Public and Environmental Affairs called "Confronting an
American Disgrace: The Systemic Causes of Homelessness."
IU Kokomo raised awareness of homeless issues last month
when the campus hosted the city’s third "Grate American
Sleep Out."

• The 2004 Jam the Jaguars campaign was a tremendous
success, thanks to the donations of food and money from the IUPUI
faculty, staff and students. Three busloads of donations were
distributed to 15 Indianapolis charities, churches and shelters.
