Published October 27, 2006

Despite an earthquake Oct. 14, Dr. Douglas McKeag was front and center as one of six course physicians at the 2006 Ford Ironman World Championship on Oct. 21, in Hawaii.
McKeag, OneAmerica Professor of preventive health medicine and chair of the Department of Family Medicine, IU School of Medicine, also is director of the IU Center for Sports Medicine and previously served as an Ironman course physician in 1999.
The event included a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile marathon run. Medical tents along the route are staffed with medical personnel overseen by a course physician. McKeag was the physician at the final tent.
In addition, McKeag was invited to present at the 18th annual official Ironman Sports Medicine Conference, Oct. 15-19. His topics addressed shoulder pain in athletes, overuse injuries, and arthritis and exercise.
